The huge earthquake, with a magnitude of 8.8 quake, was a "megathrust". It was considered the most powerful type of quake on the planet. This earthquake, really did alarm me. In 1960, a magnitude of 9.5 had killed about 1,600 people in Chile and scores of others in the Pacific.It will tie with the 1906 offshore Equador quake as the fifth-largest since 1900 if the magnitude holds. Eventhough the Chilean quake was smaller tahn the Sumatra quake of 2004, it was not expected to be anything nearly as destructive. That quake and ensuing tsunami killed 230,000 people. In my opinion, I think this time round, the people in the affected countries were able to prepare themselves earlier to save for their lives, since they already knew roughly when the tsunami will come. It's either the magnitude of the tsunami or the preparation for the tsunami caused lesser number of people injured.
