SMU students shaken but safe (Straits Times Pg A1)

Six students from the Singapore Management University were all asleep in a hostel in Chilean capital Santaigo when the first rumblings of a magnitude-8.8 earthquake began. Four of them were woman and the other two are men. They are aged between 21 to 23 and five of them were accountancy students while the other one is studying social science. They were there for a five month exchange programme. They were jolted awake in the middle of the night while the whole building was shaking. They ran out of the building packed with people on the streets and there were also shattered glass, fallen window panes and even an air-conditioner on the ground. After hearing the news, their parents were worried and immediately tried to reach them on the phone.

Flush away bad karma at temple in Japan (Straits Times Pg A4)

There is a Mantokuji temple in Japan’s central Gumma prefecture which was once an asylum for women who wanted to cut ties with their husbands. But now, it is a place to help peoplr get rid of any bad karma by only using a piece of paper they drop into the latrines. Visitors have two options, the white squat toilet which was for the cutting ties or the black one for tightening ties. And, ever since it was installed people mistaken it as a real loo and had actually used it. So, after such accidents happened they put signs indicating that the toilets are for praying.

China orders checks after deadly fireworls (Straits Times Pg A18)

After an accident that happened in China that killed at least 21 people during the Chinese New Year due to the explosion of fireworks, China issued an urgent order to local authorities to strengthan safety measures. It was also said that some of the fireworks that triggered the explosion were highly dangerous and meant to be handled only by professionals. During the incident, 13 were injured while 8 other people died in hospitals from injuries.
